About Mandya

Mandya, is a city in southern Karnataka Karnataka state of India and the headquarters of Mandya district. It is 40 km from Mysore and 100 km from Bangalore It is believed that the city is named after a sage called Maandavya. Hence it is also called Maandavya Nagara.The land of sugar and rice, Mandya is a prominent agricultural district, formed in the year 1939. Blessed with the irrigation waters of river Cauvery and Hemavathi, half of the district countryside is lush in various hues of green throughout the year. About half of the agricultural land in the district receives assured irrigation from the Krishna Raj Sagar (KRS) and the Hemavathi reservoirs.The other half is dependent on the South-West Monsoons. Paddy and Sugarcane are the main crops of the irrigated region. Ragi, Horsegram are the major crops of dry land agriculture.

Geography:The district is home to the famous Brindavan Gardens at the Krishna Raja Sagar reservoir, The Shivanasamudra waterfalls with their hydroelectricity generation plant (first hydroelectric plant in Asia), Srirangapatna (capital city of Tipu Sultan), and the Melukote temple. The Cauvery River is the main water source of Mandya, through the Krishna Raja Sagar reservoir (great engineer statesman " maker of Mysore", Dr.M.Vishveshwaraiah). Rice and sugarcane are the major crops. Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary along River Cauvery is in Mandya District.
Rivers:Mandya has five important rivers, Kaveri River and its four tributories, Hemavathi, Shimsha, Lokapavani, Veeravaishnavi. Religion ,Castes :Kannada is the dominant language in this district with Urdu taking the second place.

Explore the island fortress at Srirangapatna, built by Tipu Sultan, Tiger of Mysore, just 25 km from Mandya. Sriranganatha Temple is famous for the idol of Lord Vishnu in a sleeping posture on the Great Snake, Anantha. Visit Ganjam where the mortal remains of Tipu Sultan and his parents were laid to rest. See the beautiful ivory inlay on the doors and the exquisite architecture of the building. Just 4 km from Srirangapatna, set on 6 small islets on the Cauvery river is the Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary, a favourite haunt of bird lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. Don't miss the well laid Brindavan Gardens in Srirangapatna on the banks of the Krishna Raja Sagar dam. Boating is available here while musical fountains and beautiful illumination makes it stand out. The beautiful Shivanasamudra falls are located 60 km from Mandya. The river Cauvery falls from a great height and two separate falls are created, known as Gaganachukki and Bharachukki. Kokkrebellur is 40 km from Mandya and is home to migratory birds in October and November. You can watch painted cranes, spot billed pelicans and other variety of birds in their natural habitat. About 35 km is Melkote where the ancient Cheluvanarayanaswamy and Yoganarasimhaswamy temples are worth a visit.

Mandya District is well known for patronizing dramas and artists. It has state wide reputation for its colour full and luxurious drama sceneries. Worth mentioning are 'Benne and 'Bangari Smt. Puttamma who associated herself with 'Hirannaiah Sthree Nataka Mandali' was also a 'Hari Vidhwan' another well artist in this field was 'Malavalli Sudramma'. While writing about stage giants of Mandya district it becomes incomplete if one doesn't mention the name of Sri. H.K.Yoga Narsimha of Hosaholalu. The role of Gelayara Balaga is significant in introducing the modern dramas for the spectators of Mandya. This organisation staged many artistic dramas and also provided a forum to many drama organisation such as Rangayana , Ninasam-Thirugata etc., The contribution of Late Sri. K.V. Shankare Gowda to this field is also unforgettable. He has written a drama Paduka kireeti based on the Ramayana Dharsanam.
